1966 Ford Mustang Fastback

Posted on December 12, 2013

This is Calamity Jane, my custom-built '66 Mustang fastback. She is the first car I've ever built so I spent 3 years on it making everything right. I built her to be the perfect combination of raw vintage muscle and modern conveniences - neither refined nor spartan. 3 days after I finished the last project to complete her, someone rear-ended me going 40mph faster than I was going. So... Project Phoenix has begun.

  • All cleaned up to go to a local car show one day!
  • Interior has since been updated with new door panels - and am currently building a custom center console that looks nicer. The seats are recovered seats from a 1993 LX Mustang (much more comfortable and have locking backs and headrests). Steering wheel is a Grant Signature Series Mahogany wheel; radio is a Retrosound Model One. Everything else stock!
  • Cleaned up engine bay with the perfect amount of chrome!
  • Color of the car changes based on what it's around and how the light is hitting it - lots of pearl in the paint.
  • Wrecked 3 days after finishing everything... absolutely heartbreaking. Guy who hit me was going 40mph faster than I was. Luckily insurance deemed the car not totaled...
  • Damage more extensive on the driver's side because I had a huge spare tire in the passenger side of the trunk that absorbed a lot of force - no such luck on my side. Walked away from this with nothing but whiplash, though I did break my seat. No drivetrain damage - very difficult to destroy a Ford 9" or a Toploader trans!
  • Had to remove the entire rear end - trunk, rear frame, quarters, and everything associated. Driver's side door was also toast. Fortunately, subframe connectors I had ensured that the damage did not extend forward to the floors or roof.
  • All new metal installed! Fortunately, pretty much all of the sheet metal for vintage Mustangs is reproduced. Had to tweak the frame back into place before putting metal back on but it wasn't too bad, all things considered.
  • Finally back home after body repairs - took 6 months to get her back to perfect again. Now just to reinstall interior and get everything else up and running... :)
