Minimax Hydroplane (SeaFlea)

Posted on February 11, 2014

Literally two pieces of plywood nailed together, painted, then crammed under a 9.9 Evinrude engine with a classic Aeroliner Half-circle steering wheel. The ultimate father-son summer project. Works best in calm weather, since while in plane, the bow rides roughly 3" above the water, and clipping a wave will cause submarining and an interesting trip to the bottom.

  • Winter storage! The back transom board is only 1' high.
  • First time hooked up with the steering wheel. This is a 1978 Mercury 9.8 on it.
  • This is the 9.9 2 stroke 1988 Envinrude I bought and tuned last year. No photos of it running with the boat yet.
  • Final coat of paint. Yet to see water yet.
  • First run with the engine I've owned my entire life - a 1991 2 stroke Mercury 8hp.
  • Basic framework. The bottom is one entire piece of 8x4 plywood. As is the top piece.
  • Raw wood - ready to prime. Nose held together by staggered screws for optimum strength.
  • May long weekend in 2011. First time out all year. Water was a wonderful 8C.
