Minimax Hydroplane (SeaFlea)

Posted on February 11, 2014

Literally two pieces of plywood nailed together, painted, then crammed under a 9.9 Evinrude engine with a classic Aeroliner Half-circle steering wheel. The ultimate father-son summer project. Works best in calm weather, since while in plane, the bow rides roughly 3" above the water, and clipping a wave will cause submarining and an interesting trip to the bottom.

Engines

  • This boat has used 4 engines over it's 4 year life.
    .
First engine - 2004 9.9 Honda 4 stroke - too heavy - rode on the cav plane and made it uncontrollable.

Second - 1991 8 Mercury 2 stroke - great engine, light, and torque-y, but has an issue with the carburetor jet (since fixed), and underpowered.

Thrid - 1978 9.8 Mercury - more power, great sound, but only had a stock 2 blade prop and sat very high.

Fourth - 1988 9.9 Evinrude - Great power, tuned carb, tuned 3 blade prop, big gas tank, sits low, lots of parts (current engine).
